Preview notes: 0.1.1

What shipped in the 0.1.1 preview — wallpaper mode, the workshop, the new feeding behaviour — and the bugs we already know about.

0.1.1 is the first build we are comfortable putting on the site. It is still a preview: the tank is complete, the edges are not. Here is what changed and what we know is broken.

What shipped

Wallpaper, window, fullscreen and floating modes now share one renderer. Switching does not restart the scene, so the fish keep their position and their mood.

The workshop gained presets. A preset stores the shell, scenery, fish and camera; switching between them is instant. The Ranchu editor now exposes tail type as a separate control, which sounds small and is the difference between “a fish” and “your fish”.

Feeding behaviour was rebuilt. Fish now notice food with a delay instead of teleporting to it, larger fish push smaller ones away, and fish stop eating when they are full. This is the first of the three “reaction” behaviours from the roadmap; the other two are cursor avoidance and schooling.

Performance: the renderer now drops to a near-idle state when the tank is covered or a fullscreen app is in the foreground. On the laptop we test with, the difference during a video call is roughly a full core.

What we know is broken

  • Multi-monitor with mixed DPI can place the tank one screen over after undocking. Restarting the app fixes it; the real fix is in progress.
  • HDR desktops render the water slightly too bright. Do not use HDR mode for colour-critical work yet.
  • The floating tank does not remember its position across virtual desktops on Windows 10. Windows 11 is fine.
  • Some antivirus tools flag the installer on first run because it is new and unsigned by a large publisher. The binary is signed; we are working through the reputation queue.

What is next

The next build focuses on two things: the cursor interaction (bold fish approach, shy fish hide, repeated teasing desensitises) and the licence flow that lets the preview become a paid product. After that, the content pipeline for tanks and scenery.

If you hit something not on this list, the forum’s troubleshooting category is the fastest way to reach us. Include your Windows version and GPU — it saves a round trip.

Put a little water on your desktop.

Download the preview, keep the free tank, upgrade when you want more.
